'FIA extends sign-up period for new engine suppliers in 2026'

The FIA has extended the sign-up period for new engine suppliers. Who the FIA is waiting for is unclear, but it does keep the door ajar for new parties.

The original deadline for signing up as a new engine supplier for 2026 was 15 October, but the FIA has, according to Motorsport.com moved that deadline to 15 November 2022. Five parties are currently signed up: Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, Red Bull Powertrains and Audi.

It seems that this way the FIA wants to keep the door ajar for other suppliers, with the main question being what Honda wants to do. The Japanese manufacturer might be interested in returning to the sport. If it wants to do so on its own, it should sign itself up now, otherwise the return could also be in partnership with Red Bull Powertrains.

Another name still being mentioned is Porsche. The Volkswagen Group's other German brand is also said to be still vying for a place in F1, but not necessarily as an engine supplier. A deal with Red Bull Racing fell through and now the team is still looking for other options. It looks more like Porsche wants to attach its name to a team and engine, and not necessarily develop an engine itself.
