FIA significantly increase the fines in F1: from €250,000 to €1 million

The FIA World Motor Sport Council has convened for its third meeting in 2023. The meeting, chaired by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, approved several proposals affecting Formula 1 and other racing classes.

One of the decisions relates to the fines the stewards can impose. Previously, the maximum amount was €250,000. For F1 it has now been quadrupled to €1 million. For all other world championships, the maximum fine from now on is €750,000 and for all other (non-world) championships of the FIA, the maximum amount has been set at €500,000. The maximum fine amount had not been revised for 12 years, and the FIA believes it no longer reflects "the current needs of motorsport".

A proposal was also approved regarding the number of days allowed for Pirelli tyre testing. That number will be increased from 35 to 40 days per year in the new version of the sporting regulations. In addition, the FIA can add another four days, but these extra days are only for research on spray reduction in wet conditions.

There is also news in Formula E: the FIA has announced the calendar for the 2023-2024 season. Most notable is the return of the India EPrix despite financial problems. Furthermore, races in South Africa and Indonesia have disappeared from the calendar, and Tokyo will be visited for the first time, as previously announced.
