FIA adapts rules for 2024: DRS and engine rules to be scrapped

The FIA has updated two rules for the 2024 F1 season. They concern the opening of DRS during races and the number of engines that can be used during a season.

The news snowballed slightly on Monday due to the car launches of Stake and Williams, but the FIA announced that the sprint race format will look different in 2024. The F1 Commission had given approval for this, but in addition to the sprint format, two other issues were also addressed.

For one, the FIA announced that four engines per driver will be allowed in 2024 and 2025. In doing so, the FIA is fulfilling the teams' desire to increase this limit, now that the number of races in 2024 will also come out to a total of 24 Grands Prix.

Another, perhaps more notable rule change, is the moment the DRS may be opened. Two laps were always driven after the start of a race before the DRS was allowed to be opened. From 2024, drivers will be allowed to use their DRS after just one lap, provided of course they drive within a second of their predecessor. This rule also applies to a period behind a safety car.
