As ever, let’s take a look at the two main talking points from Formula 1 on Monday, February 2. Toto Wolff believes some rival teams may be “looking for excuses” amid the ongoing debate over the compression-ratio ‘trick’ used by the Mercedes and Red Bull Ford power units.
GPblog learned last week that the device in question — which allows teams to increase the compression ratio between a cylinder’s maximum and minimum volume — will not be outlawed, at least for the time being.
Addressing the issue while speaking to a small group of journalists, including GPblog, the Mercedes CEO and team principal shared his perspective on the controversy.
From 2026 onwards, the 2009
Formula 1 world champion will be part of Aston Martin’s structure in an ambassadorial capacity.
The appointment also marks a return to Honda, the manufacturer that played a key role in the early stages of his
F1 journey, during which he scored his first podium in 2004 and went on to claim his maiden Grand Prix win in Hungary two years later.
His time as a full-time
Formula 1 driver came to an end after the 2016 season, although he made a brief comeback at the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix, stepping in for Fernando Alonso — a former teammate he is now set to cross paths with once again after their spell together at McLaren.
After stepping away from
F1, he broadened his racing portfolio by competing in other series, most notably the World Endurance Championship, before calling time on his driving career altogether last November following the Bahrain season finale. Away from the cockpit, Button established himself as a respected media figure, combining his racing insight with regular analysis and commentary duties for Sky Sports.
