F1 Today: Ex-driver against V8 return hype, Nurburgring welcomes Verstappen

Former Formula 1 driver Montoya has pushed back against increasing calls for a return to V8 engines, offering a strong defence of the current regulations. The ex-McLaren driver, who has consistently supported the modern era despite widespread criticism, highlighted the strategic depth introduced by today’s rules, including complex energy deployment and recharge systems.

The 50-year-old also drew comparisons with the previous DRS era, arguing that overtaking at the time often left defending drivers helpless. In his view, the current regulations have helped restore a more balanced wheel-to-wheel battle. Montoya also did not hold back on the idea of a V8 comeback, insisting that racing in that period often felt more like a test session than a true competitive race.

Elsewhere, the Nurburgring has welcomed Verstappen’s growing involvement with open arms. Circuit spokesperson Alexander Gerhard praised the four-time world champion, saying it is great to see him visiting the Eifel region and enjoying the experience, describing him as “still a true racer.”

The Nordschleife has long remained a focal point for dedicated motorsport fans beyond Formula 1, and Verstappen’s presence has only added to its appeal. According to the spokesman, the Dutchman’s involvement has drawn additional attention from F1 fans as well, further boosting the profile of an already popular destination that continues to thrive on global interest.
