F1 introduces strict security and SOS phones after fans abuse

After several reports of sexual harassment during the Austrian Grand Prix, Formula 1 organisers are taking strict measures to combat fan abuse.

Cases of sexual harassment and racial abuse were reported at the Red Bull Ring earlier this month. F1 takes the reports very seriously and is taking several measures to monitor spectators. The Race reports that the organisation has taken three specific measures and that promoters of the race have been urged to take action as well.

Security between the spectators will be made more visible and is expected to take strict action against fans misbehaving. Fans will also be required to leave the grounds where necessary. In addition, there will be visible SOS help lines where fans can report abuse. The phone lines will be operated by trained security personnel. Finally, a message will be shown on the screens around the circuit urging fans to respect each other.

It is not the first time this year that fans have misbehaved on F1 circuits. In Silverstone, fans were criticised for booing Max Verstappen, while in Austria the Dutchman's fans booed Lewis Hamilton when he crashed. The F1 organisation has also taken strict measures against fans who steal signs from the circuit after the race. Spectators who do try to take items will be reported to the local authorities.
