Max Verstappen went fastest with a 1:37.520 in an intriguing first practice session at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Formula 1's return to the Sepang International Circuit is a trip into the unknown for much of the grid, but even those who drove here in 2017 found it challenging.
Tyre degredation was flagged up early by the likes of Charles Leclerc calling the expereince 'crazy'.
The track was also covered in dust and dirt, but by the halfway mark, drivers started to find their feet and improve drastically.
Russell went four tenths ahead of Isack Hadjar, who had a five-place grid penalty confirmed for Sunday's race during the session.

Then Verstappen almost took the same gap over the man who beat him to victory last time out at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
That kept Hadjar in third, followed by Charles Leclerc, championship leader Kimi Antonelli in fifth, and Lewis Hamilton sixth.
McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar piastri were notable absences from the top 10 as their team appeared to use the session for race preparation by running two different rear wings.
