Does Aston Martin's new rear wing go against the 2022 rules?

The Aston Martin car is attracting a lot of attention at the Hungaroring. The team of Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll has introduced a striking new rear wing this weekend. The upgrade does not appear to be entirely in line with the intention of the new regulations.

With the introduction of the new regulations, Formula 1 has said goodbye to the traditional combination of the endplate and rear wing. Aston Martin's new rear wing, however, does not seem to fit entirely within the 2022 regulations. The new rules actually reduce the effectiveness of the rear wing by limiting the disruption of airflow to the rear. The rounded shape allows the cars to follow each other better on the track. Aston Martin now seems to have found a clever solution to this.

While other teams have drastically simplified the connection of the rear wing surface with the endplate, Aston Martin's endplate is no longer fully integrated with the top of the rear wing and looks a lot more complex. Because the endplate is placed against the rear wing in a traditional way, it becomes wider and can generate more downforce.

The rules state that there must be a curve in the endplate, but they do not specify where it should be. The FIA will certainly look at the rear wing, as the other teams do not seem to be happy with the development.
