Leclerc reflects on 'water leakage' team radio: 'From the outside hard to get'

Similarly to Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc also did not have the best weekend in Australia. The Monegasque driver finished in eighth position after a chaotic Sunday, and also had an interesting moment with race engineer Bryan Bozzi over the team radio. In China, Leclerc explained what that was all about.

During the Australian Grand Prix, Leclerc reported a leakage inside the SF-25, explaining his seat was full of water. To that, Bozzi responded with saying: "Must be the water," referring to Leclerc's drink. A less than enthusiastic Leclerc answered: "Let's add that to the words of wisdom."

In China, Leclerc revisited the topic in the paddock. "It was an inside joke, but obviously nobody could understand it from outside, but it's something with my engineer. But we understood where it's coming from. It's coming from the drink. Obviously I had zero drink and I was wet but that's fine."

Looking at the racing side, the Monegasque driver only collected four points in Australia, and had a spin himself on the wet track. Leclerc was clear with his verdict a couple of days later. "As a matter of fact it's been a very disappointing weekend. I think part of it is how we run the car. I remain convinced that the potential of the car is much better than what we've seen. Whether it's at the level of McLaren, I don't think so. I think we are a step back, but we are definitely not as fast as what we've shown during this first weekend," he explained about the Scuderia's issues present last weekend.

He added: "There's a lot of work that needs to be done on our side in order to extract the maximum potential the car whenever we are on track. But I think there's been a lot of analysis after this first race, there's been a lot learnt and I'm sure that it will bounce back this weekend. But to say that we expect to be at the level of McLaren, not yet."
