Red Bull are reportedly set to make the switch from Renault to
Honda as their power unit supplier for the 2019 Formula One season.
According to Nikkan sports of Japan, both parties held talks on the 28th April to discuss the possibility for the four-time constructors’ champions joining forces with Honda next season.
Director of Honda Motorsport Masashi Yamomoto and head of driver development for Red Bull Helmut Marko met in the paddock to discuss Honda’s progress and vision with their power unit as well as Red Bull’s eagerness to make the switch to the Japanese manufacturer.
Any deal in the works would have to be concluded by the 5th May as the deadline for the 2019 season cuts off any negotiations in progress and would mean Red Bull could potentially be stuck with Renault for next year.
Yamomoto revealed that formal talks had begun in Azerbaijan between the two parties.
“We formally sat down for the first time, and started talking about specific requirements for the deal to move forward.
“Red Bull is a competitive team, and Honda would be open to supply them if there is an opportunity.
“We have moved on from casual discussions to formal negotiations, and we confirmed our point of views and are now at the start of the process.”
