Will Formula 1 become the successor to Formula E? From the words of Audi's CEO, whose brand will be active in the sport from 2026, it's clear that this possibility cannot be ruled out.
It's no secret that amongst all (future) manufacturers in Formula 1, Audi is the most vocal about achieving high sustainability goals. The Germans have hesitated for a long time before entering F1, but are doing so because the sport is becoming increasingly sustainable - for example, with an increased share in the power output split the electrical side of the power units for 2026 will have.

Why is Audi joining Formula 1?

Every manufacturer that participates in Formula 1 wants to eventually use the knowledge gained from the development of the technology employed in their road cars. Audi AG's CEO, Gernot Döllner, in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung aimed at an electric future: "Just look at everything that has happened over the past two years."
"First, e-mobility could not progress fast enough. And then people said: it will never happen. But these are just bumps on a long road. The future will definitely be electric."

Whilst Döllner did not mention F1, he did reveal what the direction of the Audi brand will be. If Audi seeks to go in a direction where its cars run completely on electric engine power, unless F1 moves in that same direction, their participation in the series would be illogical.
