Andrea Kimi Antonelli is Mercedes' rookie driver this season. As such he is charged with taking up Lewis Hamilton's mantle at the German team. However, that is not his biggest challenge. One of the hardest things to achieve in
F1 is balance. Tha fine line between overdoing it, and not doing enough. A driver's life can get truly hectic, as Antonelli outlines in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
The Italian
whose goal is no low-hanging-fruit by any means, revealed the mental and physical toll of juggling his rapid rise through the motorsport ranks with school life.
The Mercedes junior admitted there were moments he questioned whether he could continue chasing onward with his studies, on par with his pursuit of the deeper Formula 1 dream.
Antonelli got the upper hand on education thanks to his mom and his school
His parents, Antonelli states, passed onto him values that propelled him to success, even under the toughest of circumstances.
"They educated me, they taught me the values of life, the importance of sacrifice to achieve a goal, to pursue a passion. It was essential to listen to their advice, especially about school," he said.
When asked if school was indeed a priority, or if he cared as far as to not dissapoint his mother, Antonelli revealed the importance performing in his studies had in his life.
"I cared. But it was difficult to juggle Formula 1 and school. There were moments when I asked myself: 'Should I keep going or give up?'"
But he doesn't seem like the type to give up.
The 17-year-old Italian, who is tipped as one of Mercedes’ brightest future prospects, explained how constant travel and training commitments left him exhausted.
"It was starting to become a burden, being away all the time, but my mother pushed me, and I received help from the school (Salvemini in Casalecchio di Reno, ed.), to make up the classes I'd missed. But in the end, I decided I'd at least try, and I did."
Antonelli has become one of the most talked-about junior drivers in motorsport, with many already projecting him as a future F1 star.
Despite the sacrifices, the teenager’s talent and determination have seen him fast-tracked through Mercedes’ junior programme, and he remains firmly focused on winning the world championship.
With the pressures of excelling in his academic education now off his back, he can focus fully on chasing down the ultimate dream of any top driver. However, Antonelli’s story highlights the intense demands young drivers face long before reaching the grid.
