Alonso sees nothing in salary cap: 'I don't think that's necessary'

Fernando Alonso does not think it would be a good idea if Formula 1 decided to create a salary cap for its drivers in the future. According to the Spaniard, this decision would be unjustified given the work they do, he told Formule1.nl.

Formula 1 teams are subject to a budget cap, which limits the amount they can spend. However, the salary they give to the drivers is not part of the amount. It ensures that teams can decide for themselves how much their drivers receive.

Behind the scenes, there are noises that this too should be changed in the coming years, but Alonso doesn't think that's a good idea. "I don't think that's necessary. Drivers have always been left out in this area and drivers are increasingly used to promote Formula 1," said the Spaniard. "They are asking more and more of us and they are taking advantage of that."

After two dropouts in the first four Grands Prix, Alonso is back in good form. Over the last two race weekends he managed to get into the points. Whereas in Spain he grabbed the ninth final position, in Monaco he finished in seventh place.
