Fernando Alonso finished off a strong Qualifying session in Montreal with his Aston Martin. While it looked like he is the most likely to challenge Max Verstappen for pole position in the rain, he was eventually jumped by Nico Hulkenberg, but finished ahead of the two Mercedes and claimed P3 on the grid for tomorrow's race.
At the post-qualifying press conference, Alonso said he was "very happy" with his result. "I'm just thinking that when you are close to the line for two times and there's a red flag, you finish with a little bit of a different taste," the Spaniard said, underlining there could have been more left if the session was not red flagged for Oscar Piastri’s crash.
On the other hand, Alonso looks positively towards tomorrow’s race, with his rivals Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez starting further down the grid than him. "If I see the results and I see Checo starting at the back tomorrow, also Charles not in the top ten, obviously it's a massive opportunity for us in terms of points, for the constructors and also for the drivers eventually, if Checo is not scoring too many points," the former two-time world champion concluded.
