Alonso: "I wouldn't lose the championship lead with the best car"

This comes after Oscar Piastri's lead in the world championship shrunk drastically to four-time world champion Max Verstappen, and to McLaren teammate Lando Norris. Just 40 points separate the three, with five Grands Prix and two sprint races remaining this season, and therefore a maximum of 141 points available.

Alonso has been involved in multiple championship battles throughout his career, namely with Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. The Spaniard has been both the hunter and the hunted in a championship battle, hunting down Kimi Raikkonen in 2005, whilst being hunted by Schumacher in 2006.

When asked if there is more pressure on the championship leader, Alonso revealed: "No. I don't think so. If you are not leading the championship by now, it's because you didn't have the best car."

Piastri and Norris have both led the championship at various stages of the 2025 season, in a year where McLaren have seemingly managed to nail their car technically, in what will be the final year for the current regulations.

Alonso added: "You need to wait for something unexpected, or a small miracle, because you've been chasing the leader with not the best car. So, in the remaining races, there is hope, but you need to have some help from the leaders."

During the United States Sprint race, both of the McLaren's crashed out after a first corner collision involving Nico Hulkenberg and Alonso himself.

With Verstappen closing in on both of the McLaren drivers, the Dutchman may just be hoping for 'something unexpected' from Piastri and Norris once again.
