Almost every F1 race gets the chop in 2027, but one escapes untouched

Formula 1 has already confirmed the 2027 calendar, with the championship retaining its 24-round format but introducing several changes to the schedule. The season will feature the return of Portugal and Turkey, while the Sprint calendar will expand from six events in 2026 to 10 in 2027.

Australia, Bahrain, Japan and Abu Dhabi will join Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil and Qatar as Sprint venues, while Monaco will also host a Sprint for the first time. The championship is scheduled to get underway in Australia on March 14 and conclude in Abu Dhabi on December 12, marking the beginning of a new era for Formula 1 alongside the major technical changes coming to the cars.

The 15km reduction in race distance is directly linked to the refinements being made to the 2027 Power Unit regulations, particularly the changes to fuel flow. This means that, depending on the circuit, each Grand Prix will be approximately two or three laps shorter from 2027 onwards.

Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Miami, Canada, Austria, Hungary, Singapore, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi are all expected to be shortened by three laps, while Saudi Arabia, China, Great Britain, Belgium, Italy and Azerbaijan will lose two.

Monaco will be the only Grand Prix unaffected by the change, with the race remaining at 78 laps. This is because the Monte Carlo event is already an exception to the standard race-distance requirement, covering just over 260 km due to the circuit's short length and unique characteristics. As a result, the new 290-kilometre target for 2027 will not require any further reduction.
