Happy Hamilton opens up on new relationship

Lewis Hamilton has opened up on his relationship with new race engineer Carlo Santi following his first-ever Ferrari win at the Barcelona GP. Initially brought in as a temporary replacement for Riccardo Adami, Hamilton has previously highlighted his "Italian Bono" as a key reason behind his positive start to the 2026 season.

In 2025, Hamilton and Adami struggled to recreate the chemistry the Briton had with Mercedes race engineer Peter 'Bono' Bonnington that helped deliver his six Drivers' titles with the Silver Arrows. But all throughout what was a commanding victory at the Barcelona GP, his first-ever in Ferrari red, supportive and motivating messages from Santi were heard over team radio, and rewarded with a spot on the rostrum next to winner Hamilton.

Offering insight into his relationship with Santi, Hamilton was delighted at being able to connect with a man he admitted he hardly knew heading into the 2026 season. Hamilton told GPblog and other media at the post-race press conference "Yeah, it was great to have him up there," Hamilton said on his podium celebrations.

"I think, you know, him kind of substituting this year, jumping in and diving in deep with me. We didn’t know each other, we’d never spoken and... I didn’t know anything about him. And we met and I think got on straight away."

Aston Martin abandons the AMR26: all-new car on the way

The Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix was another race to forget for Aston Martin, as both of the Silverstone-based team's cars failed to finish on Sunday. Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was also blunt about the team's current performance, saying: "We knew that we have the worst car and the worst engine. And we've been very clear in every race so far that we have to work." GPblog understands that a completely new Aston Martin, in principle, is set to see the light of day at Zandvoort.
