Oscar Piastri is currently the leader in Formula 2, the main stepping stone to Formula 1. Charles Leclerc, George Russell and Mick Schumacher, among others, have become champions in F2 and were then allowed to move on to Formula 1. Piastri is currently the leader in the championship, but the chances of him driving in F1 next year are very slim.

That's how he sees it himself, because with the only seat left at Alfa Romeo, the Alpine youngster can only hope for the seat. "My chances of being in Formula 1 next year are extremely low, in fact not at all. Zhou (Alpine junior) is massively linked with the seat and then you have Giovinazzi," the Australian acknowledged on his own site.

No spot in 2022

"I don't expect to get into that seat. It's the only chance for next year and I would be very surprised if I actually get that seat." If Piastri doesn't get a seat, he will follow in the footsteps of Nyck de Vries. The Dutchman won the championship in 2019, but even then there was no place for him in Formula 1.

Piastri is realistic and therefore also prefers to focus on his own path. "The most realistic goal is to be a reserve driver at Alpine next year. After all, I am linked to that team. It would also be the most logical step and we will see what happens next year. My goal is to get an F1 seat in 2023," Piastri concluded.
