After his short-lived stint at flagship Red Bull Racing, Alexander Albon had to make way for Sergio Perez at the end of 2020. Although he's been gearing up for a return since his exit from the racing class, the British-Thai racer also seemed interested in other adventures, including Indycar. Now that his seat at Williams is a certainty, Albon again stresses that Formula 1 is his top priority.

“Looking at Williams, obviously the first thing is they look like they’re on the up, they’ve got the investment coming in", Albon states in conversation with Speedweek.

The Red Bull protégé continued: "I’ve also had the chance to visit the team and everyone seems very positive and optimistic. They were very keen to talk to me and to get involved in making this happen. It seemed like a great choice to get back onto the grid."

No priority

The British-Thai driver also briefly comments on his alleged forays into other racing classes before receiving the call from Jost Capito. The main one concerned his presence on the Indycar grid in Indianapolis, where he spoke briefly with Romain Grosjean. "IndyCar attracted me more than Formula E at that time, " the driver begins.

Still, the American racing class was never his priority, Albon says: "I went to Indianapolis to watch the racing and I liked it. I had a chat with Romain [Grosjean] as well about it and it looked exciting, but my priority was always Formula 1."
