The press conference was not only about the great performance of Max Verstappen by putting his RB16B on pole position. Also, the tyre debacle of two weeks ago in Azerbaijan was discussed. Both Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have an opinion about it.

The FIA and Pirelli have jointly announced new guidelines this weekend at Paul Ricard, to prevent such crashes in the future. A slightly higher tyre pressure will be used and the international motorsport federation now allows the tyre pressure to be checked not only before, but also after driving.

Hamilton to among others Motorsport-Total.com: "I am surprised that it had to be clarified, but I am grateful that the FIA has clarified it." However, Hamilton doesn't understand why tyre pressures have been raised further and argues that perhaps refuelling should return to Formula 1 so that the strain on the rubber is further reduced.

Verstappen happy with checks

Verstappen is also happy with the stricter checks in the premier class of motorsport. However, there is one big 'but' to it. "I'm not satisfied with the explanation. I know what happened in Baku. The fans and the team know it too." It's another sneer at the Italian tyre supplier who, according to the Dutchman, has come up with a vague explanation.
