LIVE | Qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Formula 1 is preparing for qualifying after the three free practice sessions. Red Bull Racing seems to have a good chance to reach pole position, but the team of Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez can't afford to slack off.
Red Bull was pleasantly surprised by the result in Monaco two weeks ago. Verstappen had a very strong race and finished first, while Lewis Hamilton was only able to finish in the sub top. As a result, the Dutchman made history by taking the top spot in the world championship for the first time in his life. In the constructors' category Red Bull also came out on top of Mercedes.
Verstappen, however, was the first to say after the race that his current position in the rankings says nothing about the rest of the season. Red Bull's driver was hoping to perform again in Azerbaijan to increase his lead over Mercedes. Although the Austrians made a good impression on the first day, Verstappen and his team will have to stay alert for surprises.
Will Mercedes fight back?
Mercedes, meanwhile, will be hoping to further reduce the gap to Red Bull. The German team has had a disappointing first day, but is confident that it can close the gap on its rivals as the race progresses. Also Ferrari is performing well for the time being, although Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc tempered the expectations earlier on.
