Charles Leclerc stood at the bottom of the podium on Sunday to congratulate his teammate Carlos Sainz and to join his team. According to Martin Brundle Leclerc probably did this for another reason as well, namely to never forget his mistake.

Painful moment for Leclerc

Charles Leclerc had the pole in his hands for the Monaco Grand Prix, but in his second run he collided with the wall. The Monegasque was allowed to start from pole, but would never do so. After the contact with the wall everything was replaced on the right side, but the left side of the driveshaft was broken after the impact on the right. This was not checked by Ferrari and could not be repaired in time.

A painful moment for Leclerc, who thus once again failed to see the finish flag of his home race. ''Charles can turn some sensational laps but also continues to be prone to the occasional sizeable mistake, and this one really hurt,'' said Brundle in his column for Sky Sports. According to the former F1 driver, this is why Leclerc was at the bottom of the podium.

Leclerc punishes himself

''He likes to openly berate himself, and so I suspect he stood underneath the podium celebrations with his mechanics for the entire procedure, which included his team-mate, Carlos Sainz, to make sure he doesn't ever make that mistake again,'' said the Brit.

''This was a chance for the young Monegasque to win his home Grand Prix in a Ferrari on the very roads he used to take the bus to school. He would have been thoroughly hurting on Monday morning especially as he can never know if and when such a chance will materialise again'', Brundle concludes.
