Red Bull and Ferrari request further clarification on budget cap sanctions

With the regulations surrounding the budget cap, there are also penalties for teams going over this budget cap. What these penalties exactly entail is still being negotiated between all F1 teams. Three teams have spoken out against some of the possible penalties on the table.

Seven out of ten teams would like to see sporting penalties as well as financial ones in the event of a breach of the budget cap. Sporting penalties could mean a deduction in points or disqualification from a race/an entire season. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff however explains to Motorsport-Total.com that not all teams are in favour of such penalties.

Majority is in favour of current proposal

"A large group, seven out of 10 teams, voted to introduce sporting penalties for a violation of the limit. Three teams voted against. They see a fine, but don't want sporting penalties. That's a bit strange," Wolff acknowledges. According to the German medium, the three teams that voted against sporting penalties are Red Bull Racing, Ferrari and AlphaTauri. Red Bull Racing themselves say that they and Ferrari want more clarity and then are ready to sign. The wording is being finalised and once agreed everyone will sign. It's just not quite ready yet.

"With the current compromise it is understandable why that is so and what regulations they find incomplete or uncomfortable to accept." According to Wolff, therefore, it won't be long before everything will be completely fixed. "Then everyone will understand that violations of the financial regulations are seen in the same way as violations of the technical regulations," Wolff said.
