Yuki Tsunoda had the pace to get into Q3 in both Bahrain and Imola with his AT02, but it hasn't worked out in the opening two races of the season. At the second Grand Prix of the season in Italy, Yuki Tsunoda crashed out in qualifying. However, the Faenza based team is being patient with the young Japanese driver.

It’s just one of those things that happens with a young driver, early in their career. I think any of these guys [in F1] have always had these incidents." said Jody Egginton. The technical director of AlphaTauri doesn't blame Tsunoda and sees little point in criticising him now.

AlphaTauri shows understanding

In the first two sectors Tsunoda seemed to be on track to set a good time. In the third and final sector the twenty year old driver only stepped on the gas a little too quickly and lost control on the kerb. “In hindsight, he probably could have taken a bit more margin, but that’s part of the rookie journey isn’t it?”

At AlphaTauri, despite two Grands Prix full of incidents, they occupy sixth place, just one point behind Aston Martin. Franz Tost's team's goal is to be in fifth place at the end of the race.
