Ferrari makes progress despite rule changes: Faster than 2020

After the Grand Prix weekend in Bahrain, there were a number of conclusions to be drawn. One of the biggest was that Ferrari have made a big leap since the end of 2020. After a disappointing 2020, the aim was to work with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to regain their place in 2021, before the big rule changes come in 2022. Looking at the data, they have at least made progress.

In Bahrain in 2020, they were more than a second and a half slower than Lewis Hamilton, who won pole last season. Five months later they had to qualify again at the same circuit, but they were almost seven tenths slower than Max Verstappen in 2021. As one of the few teams, the Italians were faster than their time in 2020, while the rule changes should have made the cars slower.

Faster than 2020

It's a good prospect for Sainz and Leclerc, who have been linked with the red car for the next few years. If the Italians can develop even more this season, podiums are within reach. A battle with McLaren for the title 'best of the rest' is certainly imminent.
