Now that Renault sees the leader leaving for McLaren at the end of 2020, it will have to look for a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo before 2021. The main candidate for this, seems none other than Fernando Alonso.

Brown knows

It's no secret anymore that Alonso would like to return to Formula 1. The Spaniard won the world title in 2005 and 2006, but was unable to continue this series for the rest of his career due to bad luck and wrong choices. Alonso therefore ended his career at the end of 2018, but wants to return for a place at the top.

However, that place at the top doesn't seem to be coming for Alonso anymore, so he will have to settle for a second row team to return. Renault has a free seat and Alonso and Renault already worked together twice in the past. According to Zak Brown, Renault shouldn't hesitate if the opportunity arises.

Alonso to Renault

''I spoke to Fernando the other day and I don't think anything is 100 percent certain yet. However, if I would be at the head of Renault, I would choose Alonso. It is a big name, he is very fast and already has a connection with the team. As far as I'm concerned it's a 'no-brainer'," Brown says in conversation with Sky Sports.

The question is perhaps even more, whether Alonso himself wants to go to Renault, since there he will not compete directly for the win or the title. ''I don't know if Fernando wants to go again 22 races in a car with which he can't win'', concludes Brown.
