Wolff's words not understood: 'A frustrated man'

Toto Wolff is not a happy man at the moment. Things are not going well at Mercedes and that is causing some frustration. The Austrian team boss himself might claim otherwise, but Karun Chandhok argues that Wolff's statements say more than enough.

It was a weekend of extremes in Japan for Mercedes. On Friday, Lewis Hamilton said after the two free practice sessions that this was the best W15 of the season, but less than 48 hours later, little was left of that optimism.

In Chandhok's view, Wolff gave a rather confusing interview after the Grand Prix at Suzuka. The W15 was not competitive in the first stint, but it improved later in the race, and in the end, the car would have been even better than the final result showed.

Chandhok sees frustrated Wolff

"I think he's a man who's frustrated. The best Mercedes was 45 seconds off the win but if we take the Red Bulls out of it, they were still 25 seconds behind the best non-Red Bull, which is a huge amount in a Grand Prix," the analyst said in Sky Sports' podcast.

"I looked back at some of the numbers, and it's a little bit better, but in the first stint, they lost 11 seconds to Sainz in 15 laps, which is three-quarters of a second nearly."After that, they still lost on average about 0.6 per lap. So it was a little bit better, but not a lot better. So I think they were the comments of a frustrated man."
