Could Adrian Newey switch to this unexpected team in 2025?

newey in talks with Williams over switch after leaving red bull

Italian media are sure that Adrian Newey will make the move to Ferrari after the first quarter of '25. Meanwhile, Aston Martin is hoping to persuade the designer, who is leaving Red Bull Racing, to come to Lawrence Stroll's ambitious squad. Although, it might not be either team that gets Newey's signature. Actually, a transfer to Williams would be a serious option for Newey.

Racingnews365 reports that Newey has already held several talks with Williams team boss James Vowles about a surprise return to his old employer. Indeed, in the 1990s, Newey was, while still fairly early in his career, the driving force behind the successes of Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill and Alain Prost. They all became world champions with Newey-designed cars.

Williams wants to return to the top

Newey later worked for McLaren and for the past 20 years, he has been at Red Bull Racing. Red Bull is of course a top team, and Williams has fallen back down the order in recent years. With Vowles at the helm, Williams is slowly but steadily working its way forward. Vowles has always said that Williams was a longer-term project, but with Newey on board, huge progress could potentially be made in a short space of time.

Should Newey indeed switch to Williams, he will be able to deal with the '26 car just in time. In that year, the regulations completely change. Newey is praised by friends and foes alike for usually being one of the first to get to the bottom of a new regulation. With every team back to square one, Newey could be perfect for Williams.
