Ahead of next weekend's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Mercedes has outlined what it hopes to achieve with the upgrades it is bringing for the event. Mercedes technical director Andrew Shovlin speaks out about the team's upcoming updates.

While Mercedes hopes the new parts will provide increased pace in qualifying and the race, it seems to be only the first step towards a return to the top of the grid. Shovlin explains the purpose of the modifications.

Shovlin on updates

Mercedes' updates have been announced all season. From the start of the season, the British team reported that major adjustments would follow in Imola. Shovlin explains the intention behind the adjustments.

"The key thing though is that we are not just looking to bring a lap time update, we are looking to head off in a different development direction. One that we think gives us a better chance in the long term of being able to challenge for race wins and World Championships." Shovlin told in a debrief on Mercedes' YouTube.
