Lewis Hamilton was given a 20-second time penalty for a speeding in the pit lane. The FIA document provided more clarity the severity of Hamilton's offence after the race.

Hamilton finished the sprint race in Miami in eighth place after a hard-fought duel with Kevin Magnussen and Yuki Tsunoda. However, Hamilton quickly lost the last spot. Indeed, after the race, the stewards announced that Hamilton had received a 20-second time penalty for exceeding the speed limit in the pits.

Why Hamilton received a penalty

The FIA document, shared after the race, showed that Hamilton was driving 90.7 km/h through the pit lane. The speed limit for the pit lane is 80 km/h in Miami. Hamilton was, therefore, going through the pits over 10 kilometres per hour too fast. For that, Hamilton was given a drive through penalty, as the sporting regulations state for a speed violation between 6 and 15 km/h.

As Hamilton could not meet the penalty during the race, the drive-through was converted into a 20-second penalty. As a result, Hamilton dropped to 16th place and the final point went to Yuki Tsunoda.
