Andre Lotterer has started the current Formula E season on the front. The German wasn't initially planning on racing in FE this season but finds himself in a competitive position. GPBlog spoke to the experienced driver. In the interview, Lotterer spoke about his decision to continue, his move to Andretti and the future of electric racing.

An extensive career

Lotterer is one of the most accomplished drivers in Formula E and has a wealth of motorsport experience, including F1, WEC and endurance racing. With his years of racing knowledge and fighting spirit, Lotterer has quickly become a fan favourite in the all-electric championship. The German driver joined the Andretti Avalanche team at the start of Season 9 and the beginning of the Gen3 era, after driving for Porsche for 3 seasons.

This decision might have come as a shock to many, as the driver had already announced in June 2022 that he would not be returning to the Formula E championship in 2023, having opted for a place in the World Endurance Championship with Porsche in the LMDh hypercar category.

In an exclusive interview with GPblog, Lotterer explained the process. "I had to decide. 'What do you want to do? Long distance or not?' I wasn't allowed to do both. Then I said okay, I'll do long distance. Because I wanted to go back. That was important to me. You have to decide. But then, later came the opportunity to work with Andretti," Lotterer told GPBlog. And how did that decision turn out? "And, of course, that was great," commented the Andretti driver.

A new team

After three seasons with Porsche, Lotterer seems to be adapting well to his new team. "The team is new to me but very pleasant. I'm very welcome here, and I also brought my engineer from Porsche over, and we also have a couple of Porsche people who are here in the team support. And the research team is across the road from us in the next garage. So from that point of view, it wasn't a big step for me. I feel very good here," said the German driver.

Lotterer is not the only newcomer to Avalanche Andretti, however, as teammate Jake Dennis also joined the team at the start of this season, and according to Lotterer, the relationship with his new teammate "is going very well, the relationship with Jake is very good, it's fun with him!"

A good start to the season

Avalanche Andretti had a pretty good start to the Formula E season at the Mexico City E-Prix, with a second-place podium finish for Dennis and a fourth place for Lotterer. As he waits for the new E-Prix this weekend, Lotterer reflects on his results in the first ePrix of the season.

"This season. It started well with fourth place in Mexico and a good team result. I think my colleague and I also scored points in all the races. But in the last two races, I didn't qualify so well and had to start at the back. I was able to follow well, but unfortunately, not as well as I wanted. But we have a good car, and I am confident that we can drive to good results," says the German Andretti driver confidently.

The Berlin E-Prix takes place on Saturday, 22 April at 15:00 CET. Follow GPblog for more information and the latest Formula E news highlights.
