Wolff: "No clear favourites" for Spa

21-08-2018 10:45

This has been one of the most intriguing seasons in a while in Formula One, with not only the lead of the drivers’ standings changing hand multiple times, but the lead of the constructors’ standings as well.

Currently it is Mercedes who lead the way in both, with Lewis Hamilton leading Sebastian Vettel by 24 points and Mercedes ahead of Ferrari by just 10 points heading into this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

The teams and drivers have had a chance to recuperate and develop their cars for the second part of the season, so despite winning five of the last nine races, Wolff refuses to say that his team are favourites for the race at Spa-Francorchamps.

He said: “It’s very difficult to make any predictions for Spa.

“If this season has taught us one thing, it’s that there are no clear favourites for specific tracks anymore and that it’s not always the fastest car that wins.”

Wolff is right, the unpredictability of the season so far is what has been most exciting. Vettel dominated in the first two races but has only won a further two since then.

Also, Red Bull have only been a factor on a few occasions, winning three races.

Wolff continued: “Instead, the competitive balance seems to swing back and forth from circuit to circuit. What is clear is that our competitors are pushing extremely hard and put up a very tough fight.

“So, we need to keep our heads down, work hard to eliminate our weaknesses and further build on our strengths, and take the season race by race.”
