A sprint race though. No sprint race. Just what is the ideal set-up for a race weekend? The growing discussions about the possible scrapping of free practice sessions is once again leading to questions about the Formula 1 weekend. Both Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg are not keen on rigorous changes.

Not everyone is waiting for a weekend where drivers are actually tested from Friday. "Friday is for practice and then you have more action on Saturday. I think the sprint race is also definitely something to explore, but just keeping the Grand Prix on Sunday and not changing the DNA of the sport," Gasly said at the F1 press conference.

Hulkenberg on race weekend

Nico Hulkenberg is also conservative when it comes to race weekend plans. "I think the build-up of the weekend is good. Friday is a practice day, then Saturday, more importantly, the excitement rises. And then Sunday, the highlight, the most important day. So I have no great desire to change anything," said the German driver.

Hulkenberg also explained that he is not that concerned with what Formula 1 looks like. "We come here and we have this rhythm since I have been in F1. It has always been three practice sessions, now it has already been shortened and that feels good."
