Max Verstappen ends the season with a 146-point lead over pursuer Charles Leclerc. However, things did not go as easy all season as they did at the end of the calendar year, Jos Verstappen also knows. However, the father of the two-time world champion is happy that things worked out, he told De Limburger.

During the first three Grands Prix, Verstappen crashed out no less than twice, losing costly points in the battle with Leclerc. It was not just the Red Bull driver who then feared a disappointing season, but his father was also at a loss for words.

"It could go either way," states Verstappen. "After the first three races, I thought it wasn't going to work out. The team then reacted quickly and well. The problem was mainly in the overweight of the car. When that was solved, the car was to Max's liking."

Verstappen didn't forget GP Monaco again

The former Formula 1 driver saw a tipping point in the race weekend in Monaco. Where Verstappen was working on his flying lap in qualifying, Sergio Perez put his car against the wall. It prevented the Dutchman from getting his desired starting position.

Perez reportedly later admitted that he did this action on purpose, which Verstappen did not forget this season. "What happened there triggered him so much that he thought: and now it's done," he said. The Mexican finished third in the championship this season.
