Marko names Verstappen's weakness: 'That's where Jos comes out in him'

Max Verstappen is often praised to the skies by his team, but Helmut Marko can also list the Dutchman's weaknesses. After a bad result, the two-time world champion still tends to disappear at times.

Verstappen has had a dominant season. At the beginning of the year, the title fight seemed to be between Red Bull Racing and Ferrari, but after several mistakes by the Italian team, Verstappen has run away with the title in dominant fashion.

With 14 wins in 2022, the Dutchman broke the record with the most wins in a single season. Yet not every Grand Prix went smoothly for Verstappen. In the Singapore Grand Prix, he only finished seventh after mistakes in qualifying and a poor race.

'That's where Jos comes out in him'

Speaking to the AD, Marko is asked if he can also list any weaknesses of the two-time world champion. The Red Bull advisor names Singapore, where the team made a silly mistake in qualifying. The Dutchman was told not to finish his final run in Q3 because he did not have enough fuel on board.

"You have to get over those situations. OK, it was a mistake by his race engineer, a stupid mistake. But that's also the engineer who did make sure he won 34 races already. Then it's poof and he limps away", the Austrian begins.

After the poor result, Verstappen left the Marina Bay circuit early and did not attend Red Bull's debrief. "In such a situation, we know we shouldn't talk to him for a while. Let him go, we know we will see him again. (...) That's where Jos [Verstappen] still sometimes comes out in him. But that is getting better and better", Marko ends.
