Jolyon Palmer does not expect Daniel Ricciardo to benefit from being a third driver next season. The former Formula One driver argues in the F1 Nation podcast that the Australian has little chance of returning with that move.

According to Palmer, the key for Ricciardo lies in the last two Grands Prix of the season. Where he failed to convince again this race year, he can show teams in Brazil and Abu Dhabi that he still has it in him to perform in Formula 1.

This coming season, Ricciardo may come into action as a reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and Mercedes. Palmer does not think that is a good idea. "I think the way that he rebuilds his career from here is to be on the grid and get results, because you can't get results as a third driver," he states.

Ricciardo can forget Mercedes chance

Lewis Hamilton announced at Mercedes late last month that he would like to extend his expiring contract, which runs until 2023. Should the Briton still leave and Ricciardo be the reserve driver, the driver suddenly has a chance with a strong team.

Palmer just does not think Mercedes will choose Ricciardo. "Let's face it; McLaren aren't putting him in, Alpine didn't want him. Are Mercedes, at the top end, fighting for titles, going to want to put him in at the end of the two years that he's had? I don't think so."
