Whereas both world titles in 2021 were only awarded during the final F1 weekend, this season the battle for the championship has been decided several Grands Prix before the end. In Japan, Max Verstappen took the drivers' title, while in the United States Red Bull clinched the constructors' title. Stefano Domenicali argues that it is certainly not disastrous for Formula 1 that it has long been known to go to that world title.

Indeed, Liberty Media' s sporting director reveals that the premier class of motorsport is not at any financial risk. He points out, for example, that the Mexican Grand Prix was completely sold out. According to Domenicali, Formula 1 is not only about who wins the championship, but fans are also very interested in the other battles.

Still, the 57-year-old Italian hopes the 2023 season will stay exciting a bit longer. "We cannot deny that Red Bull and Max Verstappen have done incredibly well. Maybe other teams didn't seize the right opportunities. We saw wheel-to-wheel battles on the track. That's what we wanted. I am confident that the fight will continue to the end next year", he is quoted by Motorsport.com.

Differences smaller

Formula 1's expectation is that the differences between teams will mostly get smaller in the coming years. At some point, the regulations are no longer 'new' and many race teams will come up with the same concepts because aerodynamically there is very little potential to unlock at some point. Moreover, the higher you finish, the less wind tunnel time you get compared to the competition. This has a levelling effect.
