McLaren are “optimistic” that Fernando Alonso will still be in their driving seat next season amidst rumours that he might be moving on from McLaren.

Alonso has completed two-thirds of the so called ‘triple crown’ winning the Monaco GP and Le Mans 24 hours.

The Spaniard just needs to win Indy500 to go down in motorsport history.

McLaren have had various problems in recent weeks and the morale inside the camp appears not to be the best.

“Fernando’s very happy at the world of McLaren,” McLaren CEO Zak Brown said when he was asked about if Alonso will stay with his side despite recent issues.

“He’s yet to make a decision. We have a very good relationship with him, he’s been with us now for quite a long time and it depends ultimately on what and where we race and how our Formula 1 car’s developing.

“I’m optimistic Fernando will stay in the family, in the F1 car. As long as he feels we can make a step forward I think it’s something he’d like to continue to do.”

There has been unrest with McLaren’s backroom team, and there has been calls for old boss Martin Whitmarsh to return to the side.

However, Whitmarsh tried his best to be respectful of the situation and refused to make any sort of clear-cut comment on the matter.
