Fernando Alonso believes the FIA made big mistakes on Sunday in Japan, while mentioning that it was a very difficult day for the motorsport federation. In the pouring rain, a crane truck suddenly appeared on the track, creating a bizarre situation.

The red flag dropped early in the race at Suzuka after Carlos Sainz parked his car in the wall and the rain proved too heavy after all. Pierre Gasly had to come into the pits after his first lap because of a broken nose, leaving him well behind the rest of the field. As a result, he narrowly passed a crane truck at high speed as he still wanted to join the safety car.

Championship for Verstappen, perfect summary

Speaking to DAZN, Alonso said the FIA had a tough Sunday. "It has been a difficult weekend for the FIA. Max [Verstappen] is now world champion, 20 minutes ago he was not. It sums up well how this day has been."

Alonso wants to help FIA

After the incident with the crane car early in the race, Alonso is keen to engage with the FIA. "We need to talk to them, after what happened in 2014 with Jules' accident, they changed the system so it would not happen again and then you see today," said the Spaniard.

According to Alonso, the crane truck should only come onto the track when the cars are in the pits or when the race is neutralised. The Alpine driver says he and the drivers want to support the FIA to look into how things could have gone wrong in Suzuka.
