American looks serious candidate for Williams:'He's going to make it to F1'

Logan Sargeant is a strong contender for the seat alongside Alexander Albon at Williams in 2023, but the American has to be patient. He still needs to get his super license.

Oscar Piastri seemed to be on his way to Williams on behalf of Alpine, but a sudden departure of Fernando Alonso has turned Silly Season upside down. Nyck de Vries was previously mentioned at Williams after his test for the team in Barcelona, but meanwhile a Williams junior is increasingly making his mark in F2.

Sargeant is in his first season in Formula 2 and is currently third in the championship after two wins. The title is still within reach and the American will be keeping a close eye on developments at Williams. Alexander Albon has already been announced, but Nicholas Latifi's future is anything but certain. Sargeant will also get the chance to really show himself in his home country. He will be in action during the first free practice session in America.

''He will be in a Formula 1 car in the future, I'm absolutely convinced. Of course, we are impressed. You know, it's his first season in F2. We didn't put any pressure on him. He has the time to develop and he's really impressed us with how fast he has got to grips with the car,'' Williams team principal Jost Capito said of the 21-year-old American at Formula1.com.

Super license

While Albon has already been confirmed for 2023, the announcement of the second seat at Williams will probably take a little longer. Officially, Sargeant does not yet have his super license. For that he needs to finish fifth in the F2 championship and Sargeant's lead over number six Frederik Vesti is only 28 points.

Capito also says that there are other bidders for the seat. An American driver in F1 will be welcomed by the owners of the sport, but Williams is also looking at the rest of the market. Daniel Ricciardo, for example, may also become available and Mick Schumacher is also not yet sure of his seat at Haas.
