Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas has topped the charts in the second day of testing in Spain, keeping Ferrari testing driver Antonio Giovinazzi and McLaren prospect Lando Norris behind him in second and third respectively.
The Finn set the pace with 1:16.904, almost eight-tenths of a second slower than Lewis Hamilton's pole position lap last Saturday (1:16.173). Bottas was more than half a second up on Max Verstappen, who set the pace on the first day of testing.
Ferrari testing driver Antonio Giovinazzi retained second place on the second day because of the quiet afternoon on the Circuit de Catalunya, under a tenth of a second behind Bottas. It has to be noted though that Giovinazzi was on the new, softer hyper soft tyres. It was the Italian who also completed the most laps on the day, logging 149 laps for Ferrari.
Lando Norris secured third place in the very final minute of the session for McLaren, snatching it for Kevin Magnussen and Haas. Norris spun the MCL33 in turn 12, but no damage was done to the car.
"It's the one corner that has been quite tricky because of the wind," Norris explained, talking about turn 12.
"It was more of a mistake on my part, I pushed the entry a bit too much and lost the rear."
