Max Verstappen says in conversation with F1-Insider.com that he never really had an idol. According to the Red Bull Racing driver, you can only lose if you want to be as good as your idol.

Verstappen has won his first world title and is being compared to the greatest drivers who have ever driven in Formula 1. Advisor Helmut Marko compares the 24-year-old Dutchman to Ayrton Senna. Although the words are nice, Verstappen says he never had an idol himself.

No idols for Verstappen

"I have respected many athletes because of their achievements," Verstappen says. According to the reigning world champion, it is not good to be addicted to an idol. "You can only lose, because you can only be as good as you can be, but never better. That's why I've always tried to be myself."

Despite being compared a lot to legendary drivers, Verstappen remains down-to-earth about it. He often responds to people who compare him by saying he doesn't want to and can't compare himself to others.

On the hunt for more titles

Asked if Verstappen is chasing the seven world titles won by Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen replied as follows: "I want to win as many titles as possible, but don't think about how many it can be." Verstappen knows that it is often also down to the material.
