Charles Leclerc is closing the gap on Max Verstappen in the world championship. The Monegasque won the Austrian Grand Prix, while the Red Bull Racing driver limited the damage by finishing second and setting the fastest lap of the day. The difference is down to 38 points.

Sergio Perez lost 25 points to Leclerc, so his retirement is extremely painful. World Championship leader Verstappen also lost nineteen points, which means the gap has grown to 57 points, a considerable number. For Carlos Sainz, his DNF is even more galling as he looked set to finish second at the Red Bull Ring but instead is now 75 points behind. That equates to three GP wins and we have 'only' eleven weekends to go in 2022.

George Russell is now just five points behind Sainz and Hamilton did good business in the World Championship by scoring another podium. Number seven Lando Norris also had an excellent race and Mick Schumacher moved up to fifteenth in the standings after a fine sixth place in Spielberg.
