The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps in 2022 will look different from previous years. The circuit has been working on improving the track for weeks and shared new photos on Tuesday.

Too many serious accidents

In recent years, very serious accidents have occurred regularly at Spa-Francorchamps. The low point was the crash of Anthoine Hubert in a Formula 2 race in 2019 who died from his injuries due to the heavy impact.

It was clear to the circuit that the safety of the Ardennes circuit needed to be improved. This is what the circuit has been working on for some time and in doing so they are happy to show pictures of the progress made. The new photos show the gigantic grandstand at the top of Eau Rouge and Radillon, but there is more to come.

Safer racing at Spa-Francorchamps

The new grandstand stands on a spot where an old house used to stand. This was completely removed to make room for a larger run-off area of the very fast corner. In previous years, the wall on the outside of Eau Rouge and Radillon came close to the inside of the left hand corner. When a car landed in the tire pile there, it was often springing back onto the track, creating dangerous moments.

It can also be seen that there is new asphalt and that the gravel beds have returned in some places. The inside of turn eleven has been widened and an additional "inside corner" has been added there for motorcycle races.
