Hello and welcome to another day of enthralling F1 stories straight from the paddock itself. The F1 Commission has confirmed that drivers may now request changes to their racing numbers starting in 2026. Before this update, driver numbers were fixed and could not be altered following their introduction as permanent from the 2014 season.
As a result of the new rule,
Lewis Hamilton would be able to switch from his long-used number 44. Hamilton adopted the number because it appeared on the licence plate of his first go-kart, and it has remained part of his
Formula 1 identity. The number is also linked to his charity Mission 44, launched in 2021 to support disadvantaged and underrepresented young people entering motorsport.
Mission 44 works with Mercedes’ Ignite initiative, has awarded £8 million in grants, and has supported 42 partners. The number 44 is additionally used in Hamilton’s PLUS 44 merchandise brand.
Lando Norris set a new Formula 1 record at the Brazil GP by becoming the first driver to win his opening 11 grands prix at 11 different circuits. This achievement moved him ahead of
Michael Schumacher, who had won his first 10 races at 10 separate tracks between 1992 and 1994.
Norris’ maiden victory occurred at the 2024 Miami GP, followed by wins in the Netherlands, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi later that season. In 2025, he has added seven more victories, each at a different venue, driving the MCL39.
Schumacher’s original record began with his first win at the 1992 Belgian GP, continued with the 1993 Portuguese GP, and expanded with eight wins during Benetton’s strong 1994 campaign. His streak ended at the 1995 Brazil GP when he repeated his previous year’s Interlagos win.
