At Red Bull Racing and even Ferrari, young talent has been able to break through in recent years. Compared to the competition, Mercedes has a 'very old' driving duo, especially when Carlos Sainz 2021 joins Ferrari. George Russell therefore hopes that the world champions look to the future as well.
"Mercedes has a junior program for a reason," says the Williams driver against Sky Sports F1. "As with Red Bull and Ferrari, the whole thing is to try to develop a driver and put to work with the big team".
Of course, Russell's saying this isn't so strange. He is currently the most distinguished Mercedes-junior and hopes that after winning the Formula 2 title in 2018 his patience at Williams will eventually be rewarded with a seat on the factory team. He encourages Mercedes to look to the future.
"Lewis and Valtteri are a great duo, so they will be wondering if anything needs to be changed. But if you look at the other teams, they now have a stable drivers duo for the next five to six years. That stability is important and it's good to see that those teams are looking to the future".
