Josep Maria Marti beat Alex Dunne and Jak Crawford to Sprint race win in Formula 2 at Hungary. How it happened
Gabriele Mini had contact with Roman Stanek on the opening lap as the leaders, Josep Marti and Arvid Linblad were being chased down by Alex Dunne in P3, with Victor Martins in P4.
The Prema Racing Italian driver was penalised with a 10-second penalty for causing a collision. As ahead the gaps remained marginal with Dunne hunting down the two Red Bull juniors, Martins in P4 led a DRs train that stretched out into P16.
On lap 7, Martin and Lindblad edged out and away from Dunne, with Lindblad setting the fastest tour of the race so far.
As lap 8 began, Lindblad dove down the inside at Turn 1 and took the lead of the race, but only for a short time, as Marti got his elbows out and overtook the Briton around the outside of Turn 3.
Dunne overtakes Lindblad for P2 and sets on the charge for the win
On lap 14 after Marti's complaints regarding Lindblad fighting him for P1 over the radio, the Briton fell out of DRS range and into Dunne's clutches whoup until then had appeared to be biding his time.
On lap 19 Dunne then made a Daniel Ricciardo-like late lunge to take P2 from Lindblad and set on the charge to take the lead from Campos Racing driver Marti.
Lindblad's tyres fall way, Dunne and Marti's near-crash
On his earlier charge for the lead, Lindblad had chewed through his tyres and fell out of DRS proximity to Marti and Dunne ahead.
As Martins tried to take Lindblad's position coming out of Turn 2, Lindblad kept it on the inside for Turn 3, but the Briton's defense may have been outside the regulations, seeing as he left the track coming out of the corner.
Jak Crawford lead the cue behind the Briton in the fight for the last podium position. The Red Bull star fought tooth and nail into Turn 1 to retain P3.
On lap 22 the Safety Car was deployed in light of Sebastian Montoya's parking of his car down the main straight, neutralising the race as the Marshalls entered the track to recover the stricken Prema Racing car.
Under Safety Car conditions a near-crash incident unfolded between the leaders as Marti braked down the main straight, prompting Dunne to take evasive action, for which he complained over the radio.
Late race push for the win
Montoya's car was removed from the track on lap 24, and on lap 25 racing resumed.
Luke Browing took Victor Martins for P5, as championship contenders Leo Fornaroli and Verschoor fought for P7.
Lindblad once again fell out of contention for the win with Crawford hunting him down for P3 which he was able to do on the final lap of the race.
