Grosjean returns to WEC with Lamborghini

Romain Grosjean will become a factory driver for Lamborghini from next year, reports Marca. The Italian brand has brought in the former F1 driver as the car's developer for the FIA World Endurance Championship.

After leaving Formula 1 at the end of 2020, Grosjean made the move to IndyCar, where he currently drives for Andretti Racing. Next year, he will still drive for Andretti in IndyCar competition, but in addition, he will thus do development work for Lamborghini. The plan is for him to help design Lamborghini cars for the WEC and IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar championships in 2023 so that he can actually race for Lamborghini in 2024. It is still unknown whether Grosjean will race in both championships or just one.

For Grosjean, this means he will race again in the endurance championship for the first time since 2010. Lamborghini has partnered with Iron Lynx to compete in the championships in 2024. "It's an incredible endurance racing project. It will be a very exciting category, with all the manufacturers going to participate," Grosjean said.

Grosjean left Formula 1 after Haas sacked him and his teammate Kevin Magnussen for financial reasons. Although Grosjean could make little impression in the final years of his F1 career, he still left the sport in a high-profile way. At the fifteenth race of 2020 - which eventually turned out to be his last race - Grosjean crashed into the crash barrier in the first, causing his car to break in two and catch fire. For a long time, it was uncertain whether Grosjean got out of the car safely, until footage was finally shared showing him managing to climb out of the burning wreckage. Grosjean only sustained some burns from the accident.
