Cassidy secures his maiden pole in surprising qualifying for ePrix Rome

Nick Cassidy has qualified on pole for the Rome ePrix. The Envision Virgin Racing driver set the fastest time in the Superpole on a drying track. Behind Cassidy are Norman Nato and Pascal Wehrlein. For Cassidy, it's also the first points he's earned this season by taking pole.

Formula E qualifying is split into four groups, after which the six fastest drivers can go out on track again to divide the top six. Because of the drying conditions, the track was still very wet at first, but the track was drying out and because of that some drivers set fast times, while others were in the back row.

Championship leader, Sam Bird, had to settle for twelfth place. The top six of qualifying consisted of four drivers who drove in the last group, where the track was at its driest. As a result, there were a number of surprises. Cassidy and Nato had never scored any points, but both managed to get through to the Superpole.

Two rookies on the first row of the grid

In an exciting Superpole, in which Nato, Cassidy, Maximilian Günther, Alexander Sims, Wehrlein and Stoffel Vandoorne took part, it was Cassidy who set the fastest time. The drying track played out perfectly for Nato and Cassidy. The two rookies were the last to go on track, when the track was at its driest. The top three consist of Cassidy, Nato and Werhlein. The ePrix in Rome starts at 13:00.
