The rapid rise of Kimi Antonelli has given Italy and Italian fans another major sporting star to rally behind alongside tennis star Jannik Sinner. Both youngsters are in exceptional form and have remained unbeaten for some time now.
Across Italy, the so-called Sinner mania has now been joined by full-blown Antonelli mania, with the young Italian driver enjoying a sensational start to the 2026 Formula 1 season and catching many by surprise after George Russell had initially been tipped as the clear favourite for the title. Instead, Antonelli now leads the championship standings with a 20-point advantage over his Mercedes team-mate.
The Bologna-born talent, still only just an adult, has already made history by becoming the youngest championship leader Formula 1 has ever seen. With three consecutive poles and victories already under his belt, Antonelli has rapidly emerged as a genuine title contender in what is shaping up to become an explosive intra-team battle at Mercedes, while the paddock waits to see whether anyone else will eventually join the fight.

Italy embraces another generational talent in Antonelli

Antonelli’s meteoric rise has naturally brought enormous media attention with it in Italy, although, as Toto Wolff himself pointed out not long ago, that level of hype could also become a dangerous burden to carry. The Mercedes team principal admitted that, with the Italian national football team no longer dominating headlines, the spotlight in the country has now shifted almost entirely towards Sinner and Antonelli, describing both as national superstars whose exposure and expectations now need to be carefully managed.
“The bigger problem is the Italian public. Now that they are not qualified for football, it’s all about Sinner and Antonelli. So it’s the two that are superstars, and that is something which we need to contain.

What truly sets Antonelli apart is his extraordinary sense of normality. He comes across as a grounded and simple young man, deeply attached to his family, without unnecessary distractions and remarkably natural even in front of the microphones, while his unique generational talent is becoming increasingly evident on track with every passing Grand Prix.
Clearly, despite his rapid rise, the Italian driver has not yet reached the firmly established status now enjoyed by Sinner, who continues to cement himself among the greatest tennis players of all time by breaking record after record and collecting trophy after trophy. At the same time, however, there is no denying that Italy can finally enjoy having a genuine Italian Formula 1 title contender once again - something that has not happened since Alberto Ascari back in 1953.

Antonelli is, however, five years younger than his fellow Italian and still has enormous room for growth, while Sinner is now approaching the peak of his athletic and tennis career. Clearly, the road to becoming a Formula 1 world champion is still a very long one, and alongside him sits a team-mate who will fight tooth and nail until the very last race. Even so, just a handful of Grands Prix have already been enough to spark the rise of a new sensation in Formula 1, perhaps unlike anything seen since the emergence of Max Verstappen.

Russell warned over 'kid' Antonelli: ‘This could be the beginning of the end’

Nelson Piquet Jr. has raised concerns over George Russell's long-term future at Mercedes, suggesting the Briton could be entering a delicate phase of his career amid Antonelli’s rapid rise within the team. The former F1 driver reflected on Russell’s early years alongside Hamilton, explaining that the Briton initially found himself in a relatively comfortable position, with most of the pressure and expectations naturally falling on the seven-time world champion instead.

According to Piquet, Russell benefited from a scenario where simply keeping pace with Hamilton was already seen as a strong result, while outperforming him only boosted his reputation further. The Brazilian contrasted that situation with the current dynamic inside Mercedes, where Antonelli’s arrival has dramatically shifted the spotlight within the team.

Despite Russell’s recent struggles, Piquet still considers him one of the strongest drivers on the current Formula 1 grid alongside names such as Leclerc, Verstappen, Hamilton and Alonso. At the same time, however, he admitted that the growing gap to Antonelli over the last few races could become a worrying sign for Russell moving forward.
